You feel safe where you are seen…
“Selma” is a book inspired by the students I taught in Denver. Many of my students were Muslim and the girls sometimes wore hijabs. I learned a lot from families and soon found myself emerged in different cultures. A problem, I realized as I picked diverse books to represent the student population, is limited access to books that my Muslim students could relate too. Therefore, I wrote Selma and will continue to write books that acknowledge underrepresented groups.
